Clergy meets medics
Remarks by KPMDU
We demand for the CBA to be signed and implemented as we mark 40 days of strike. Ther have been meetings with Government last week on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Council of Governors represented local governments while Ministry of Health represented the national Government. The issue of internships should not be kept on hold waiting for court processes before implementing. The courts should not be left to determine the fate of intern doctors. How can we trust court processes if CBA deposited in court was violated. The number of doctors to be employed should be increased since the ones on duty are a very small ratio to the population of the country.
Remarks by Kenya Union of Clinical Officers
So far the Government has not called them to the table despite 22 days of strike. Only two counties have responded, Homa Bay and Kajiado but not fully honoured hence not back to work. They have given their petition to the clergy as middle ground persons to then pass the same to Ministry of Health.
The union is planning for a demonstration tomorrow 23rd April 2024 because the Government is disobeying court orders and policies e.g CBA. When the Government is called to the table for negotiations they don't come. We have the right to strike and patients also have the right to treatment. The clergy are standing in the gap because the political leadership are not prioritizing health.
We are taking a petition to the President of the republic of Kenya to find stability/ predictability on the health sector, that's the position taken so far. They also have an issue with Salaries and Renumerations Commission. SRC refused to approve as directed by MOH on return to work formula but they have refused. They would like as a solution to meet the President without intermediaries who interfere in the process. The clergy have been called upon by the medics to offer a middle ground solution on the two facttons. Cholera could explode in the next two weeks as a result of flood waters flowing into pit latrines. The Government has the responsibility to intervene by coming to the negotiating table to find a return to work formula.
Remarks by Kenya National Union of Lab officers
During times of war, people run to Church. During this moment of us and Government being on opposite sides, we have called on the clergy to help intervene.
On 17th April 2024, we called for a meeting. MOH and COG did not show up. The same parties that did not show up last are now calling the union to another meeting on Thursday this week. If we agree on a truce we will sign an agreement that does not even involve more money on the table.
The Government seems to be neglecting the responsibility they campaigned for, both local and national. As unions we promised welfare which we are delivering. We urgent the Government to fulfill their promises.
