Launch of Public Sensitization Campaign on Electric Mobility in Kenya

EPRA and UNEP have a 2022 agreement on emobility to transition to an environmentally friendly means of transport. With 9.6 million customers connected to the grid and supplying 75% of electricity, KPLC has the potential to drive the adoption of E.V through reliable power supply. EV chargers at Stima Plaza can be used for free by the public. There is a current ongoing transition to get Kenya Power vehicles and motorbikes to be powered by EV. Kenya Power has held two major expos and conferences, one in February and another in the month of May. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) was established under the 2019 Energy Act. It is responsible for economic and technical regulation of electricity, renewable energy, petroleum sub-sectors and coal. The core mandates include tariff setting, review, licensing and enforcement.

According to Kenya National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP), the transport sector contributes a lot to greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicles with zero emissions can be used to decarbonize road transport. There is a target that 5% of vehicles imported into Kenya annually should be electric by 2025.

The Kenyan Government has come up with policies towards adoption of emobility. An affordable e-mobility rate of Ksh16 for a unit of electricity for public charging stations. This then reduces to Ksh 8 per unit during off-peak hours. Reducing excise duty from 20% to 10% for fully electric vehicles compared to 35% for other vehicles.

What are the benefits of adopting electric vehicles? Noise free transport. It contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The reduced air pollution improves urban air quality. There are also benefits of adopting e-bikes. The maintenance costs of e-bikes are low compared to petrol-powered motorbikes. You only need to charge the battery, inflate the tyres, check the brakes and enjoy the ride. There is no need for valves, oil carburetors, pistons and other components.
