Preparations for 61st Madaraka Day



Speech by Gov Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura. Madaraka Day marks Kenya's independence in 1963. This year's theme is agriculture/ food security which is the backbone of Bungoma County. Western region is home to Bungoma, Vihiga, Kakamega and Busia Counties. The region has a population of 5 million people. It has an ethnic diversity although Luhyas are the majority. Bungoma County specializes in sugar cane farming, maize farming, millet farming, sorghum farming. There are currently efforts to reinstate the sugar industry through the sugarbill and subsidized fertilizer. There are Government efforts to revive the tourist facilities in Western region in order to be able to host more tourists. 

USA visit by the Kenyan President came with economic benefits:

a) AGOA. Six economic zones for manufacturing clothes will receive economic boosts. 

b) Health. Over 910 billion Shillings for health programs.

c) Education. Over 58.5 billion Shillings for educational programs and research. 

d) Security. Over 130 billion Shillings to increase surveillance and fight terrorism. 

e) Governance. Over 26 billion Shillings to strengthen governance and accountability. 

f) Infrastructure. Over 195 billion Shillings for infrastructure developments including Nairobi Mombasa Highway.
