#Reject the finance bill 2024
Statement by University and College Students with special needs Association of Kenya (UCSSNAK) and it is a statement on the #reject finance bill 2024 protests.
We send our condolences to the families that lost their loved ones during the protest. We also wish quick recovery to those injured during the same protest.
Persons with disability have been especially affected, hindering their ability to access essential services. These are the everyday services required on a daily basis plus the everyday goods required on a daily basis. This has therefore hindered their everyday normal activities. They face a higher risk in emergency evacuation since their mobility is somehow more limited in such situations. In most cases, they will need an extra helping hand in order to move from point A to point B.
We appreciate the President's effort in turning around by withdrawing the finance bill 2024. It is in this regard that we request that students with special needs as well as people with disability have their concerns addressed. Their voices should also be heard in such policy making processes. There are various ways they can be heard:
a) Enhanced budgeting. Zero taxation for devices that assist with disability. Learning facilities should be expanded to include facilities that enable people with disability to move around.
b) Access to support services. Counseling and career guidance should be readily available with special needs.
c) Affordable healthcare. They should address the specific medical needs of students with disability.
d) Protection and security. Students with special needs should be protected from discrimination, harassment and exploitations during times of social unrest.
