His excellency President William Ruto on Friday July 5th 2024 announced various austerity measures. One of them states that public servants who attain retirement age of 60 years should retire immediately. A total of 39,361 civil servants are expected to retire within the next five years.
Youth empowerement. Last week Monday was International Youth Day. The BETA plan established 274 digital hubs to create job opportunities for the youth across the country. An example is jitume hub located at Rift Valley Institute of Technology that has employed over 200 youth and trained more than 516,505 youth on digital skills. It has created over 152,171 digital jobs, reducing the unemployment levels in the country. It has activated the local assembly of smart phones available for sale at Safaricom and Telkom outlets. This has helped to bridge the digital gap in rural areas.
Livestock production. The Government is investing in agriculture as a key driver of economic growth. This involves engaging veterinary interns to support livestock production. Subsidized livestock feed through VAT exemptions has helped to stabilize feed prices. Providing beehives to support honey processing. Supporting pastoralists with livestock insurance under the DRIVE program enhances relisience.
We urge Kenyans to be patient with the President as he continues to implement changes. These changes will lead to the country's economic growth.
