Pre Global Bioeconomy Summit Media Briefing
The International Advisory Council on Global Bioeconomy (IACGB) together with East African partners the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), BioInnovate Africa, the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) will hold the 4th Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) on 23rd to 24th October 2024.
The main topic for the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2024 is One Planet - Sustainable Solutions for Global Challenges The main speakers during the briefing were Professor Christine Lang who is co-chair of IACGB. Dr. Julius Ecuru who is Manager at Bionnovate Africa. Dr. Philip Osano who is the Centre Director of Stockholm Environment Institute. Fortunate Muyambi who is the Executive Director of EASTCO. There was also a representative from UNEP. So far three regional Bioeconomy conferences have been held in Africa and it is now the first time that Global Bioeconomy Summit is being held outside Europe.
We need a shift on policy in the following areas: pollution, waste management and climate change. The main challenges in Africa include degraded soil that constantly needs fertilizer and post harvest losess upon harvest. The main challenge in scaling biotechnology in Africa is financing both in developing and developed countries.
The intended objectives of the summit:
To implement indigenous knowledge.
To engage with bioeconomy partners from the rest of the world and gain knowledge from other organizations around the world.
Cutting edge innovations.
Opportunities for collaboration especially collaborating with India and Latin America since they will have a number of delegates attending the summit.
To work with partners that will push for projects that enable achieving the region's vision.
