Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary at the State Department of Internal Security and National Administration. He was the chief guest at the launch a major initiative aimed at promoting peace and countering violent extremism in East Africa.
The official launch of the Regional Programme on Peace Building and Preventing Violent Extremism took place at Kwetu, Nairobi, with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (ICEPCVE).
What is peacebuilding and how do you define peace?
PS Dr. @ray_omollo emphasized the ongoing challenges of violent extremism and peacebuilding efforts during the launch of the 'Peace Building and Preventing Violent Extremism in East Africa Program' - an initiative supported by @UNDPKenya and @KOICAKenya. He highlighted that while Kenya has made strides, specific regions, including the capital, continue to face occasional extremist threats.
Reflecting on past tragedies such as Westgate, Mpeketoni, Garissa University, Dusit, and the recent Shakahola incident, Dr. Omollo noted, “These occurrences underscore the persistent threat of religiously motivated violence in our nation.” He expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of these attacks, which have left Kenya in a constant state of vigilance.
The programme's goal is to address the root causes of extremism, foster peaceful coexistence, and strengthen regional stability. Dr. Omollo emphasized the importance of cooperation among partner organizations in tackling these challenges.
The central focus of the new initiative is youth unemployment, which Dr. Omollo identified as a major factor contributing to the rise of extremism in the region. "One of the main causes of violent extremism is youth unemployment," he stated, stressing the need for economic empowerment to counter the lure of extremist ideologies.
The programme will concentrate on creating jobs, and developing local capacity to challenge extremist narratives. It aims to support inclusive development, uplifting marginalized groups and providing alternatives to radicalization.
Dr. Omollo expressed optimism, calling the launch a key step toward a peaceful and secure East Africa. "By tackling the socioeconomic issues that drive extremism, we are securing a better future for the region," he said.
