Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints Unveils first temple in East Africa
The newly completed Nairobi Kenya Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This significant milestone marks the first temple of the Church in Kenya and is a momentous occasion for members and the broader community. Located in Mountain View, along Hinga Road off Waiyaki Way, the temple opens its doors to the public with guided tours beginning at the adjacent Latter-day Saint meetinghouse. This event not only marks a religious milestone but also crowns decades of dedication, perseverance, and faith by the Church’s growing community across East Africa.
From Thursday, April 17, to Saturday, May 3, 2025, the public can explore the sacred temple during daily open house tours (excluding Sundays).
Visitors will begin their experience at the adjacent Latter-day Saint meetinghouse before embarking on a 40-minute guided walk-through of the temple’s beautifully designed interior. For many Kenyans, the temple is more than a religious landmark—it is a bridge between local heritage and a global faith, a symbol of hope, and a promise of unity. As the doors open, a new chapter begins, one where heaven feels a little closer to home.
Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the Nairobi Kenya Temple on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in a single session broadcast live to all congregations within the temple district.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has experienced steady growth in Kenya since the first baptisms in 1979. From just two congregations in Nairobi and Kiboko in 1981, the Church now has over 19,200 members in approximately 70 congregations across the country. Kenya’s first stake was organized in 2001.
