Let us Redefine Our Nation
Micah 6:8 He has showed you, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
The Executive Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) held it's statutory meeting over two days at Jumuia Conference and Country Home, Limuru over the last two days. There was a message concerning the shaping of the future of our Nation as follows:
Understanding Kenya's Demographics. Kenyans aged below 35 years make up 79% of the population. This particular age group is deprived of access to opportunities, hence increased probability of social chaos that we are currently witnessing in our country. If institutions and leaders can dedicate most of their resources in empowering the youth, it can have a positive impact on society. NCCK has led by example on this area by doing the following: One, Establishing centres of excellence for the youth to gain skills that will create dignified livelihoods. Two, Church members to develop youth programs that will benefit them socially and economically besides benefiting them spiritually. Three, organize forums at local levels that can grow into a national economic forum where Kenyans can find solutions for a better future. Four, Review budgets and programs to increase resources targeting the youth. Five, Spearhead capacity building for the youth to increase public accountability. Remove the offices of 1st lady, 1st daughter and remove their budgets. Such funds can be channeled to youth empowerement programs.
Listen to the people of Kenya. As a result of not listening, peacefully picketing Kenyans have been killed by the police which is totally unacceptable. Members of Parliament ignored the cries of Kenyans and passed the finance bill 2024. This Parliament therefore lost it's legitimacy with Kenyans in general. This is because they belittled the wishes of those who voted for them and instead chose to fulfill the wishes of the executive. NCCK mourns with those who lost their loved ones during demonstrations. Also praying for quick recovery for those who were injured.
No further bloodshed. We condemn the abductions and arrests of youth who were only exercising their right to peaceful picketing. There was a court order stopping the deployment of military but they went on and ordered for their deployment. The situation in the country doesn't warrant their deployment. NCCK is organizing for it's Church members to mark 7 days of mourning to remember those who died in picketing within the Nairobi CBD. Tge 7 days of mourning commence on Friday 28th June until Sunday 7th July 2024.
Reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. This should involve completing the exercise of appointing IEBC Commissioners. Constituencies that are yet to hold by-elections are suffering injustice plus Kisii County where Deputy Governor can't be sworn into office. The boundaries review process is also yet to be done as expected within it's timelines.
