NCCK - Build a Kenya that works for all
NCCK 65th General Assembly
NCCK held the 65th General Assembly at Jumuia Conference, Limuru from 20th to 23rd August 2024. The theme of the conference is Dignified Livelihoods, Resilient Communities drawn from Galatians 6:9. This assembly meets once every three years. The 65th General Assembly raised matters of national concern.
1. Build a better Kenya for all. The country has largely been peaceful after the 2022 general elections but issues have been swept under the carpet. Peaceful Protesters have either been killed or injured, lots of injustice and democracy has deteriorated. All this has been made worse by citizens feeling excluded from decision making on national issues. We recognize the generation Z for organizing protests that fffffenabled radical Government changes. Since they make up to 17 million citizens, policies by the nation and church cannot ignore them.
2. Climate Change. This has led to food insecurity yet the government hasn't done enough in terms of mitigation. We call on the National Assembly to withdraw agriculture bills that threaten small holder farmers. They include seed and plan varieties act, livestock bill 2024, nuts and oil crops bill 2023, food and feed safety bill 2023. NCCK member churches have launched a program to plant trees over the next ten years.
3. Education. Concerns on CBC. Junior Secondary schools are facing a crisis in terms of facilities and teachers. Wastage of public funds through multiple scholarships. Taxpayers money is given to the governor, women rep, MP, MCA for bursaries. All the above funds should be placed into an education fund in order to make it free. The new education funding model has resulted in qualified children crying for failing to go to university despite qualifying. Teachers and lecturers are planning to go on strike upon the re-opening of schools. This will hinders the progress of learners if a solution is not brought up.
4. Re constitute IEBC. The General Assembly is concerned that IEBC is not functional. The leading political formations have conspired to betray Kenyans in this manner. It has also halted the review of electoral boundaries.
5. Independent investigations on extra judicial killings. An independent commission should be set up since the police can't investigate themselves after having executed such killings.
6. Listen to the people. The main reason behind the recent Gen Z's protests was the government wasn't listening to the people, a sort of disrespect. Corruption should be fought. We are against the issue of corruption cases being dropped as it leads to impunity. The level of taxation should be reduced. Develop a plan for the youth in order to avoid the country disintegrating in chaos.
