2024 NCCK NATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE
More than 160 youth from across the country converged at Jumuia Conference and Country Home, Limuru for the 2024 NCCK National Youth Conference. This conference was guided by the theme "Empowered Youth for Sustainable Livelihoods." This theme was based on the scripture in 1 Thessalonians 4:11.
State of Kenyan youth. Youths are the biggest stakeholders in the country's population accounting for 70% of Kenyan population. It is a major concern that youth continue to be sidelined in the political and religious spheres. To make matters worse, more than 65% of Kenyan youth are unemployed.
Message to President William Ruto. The youth are deeply disappointed that the President is not listening to the youth, majority of whom had voted for him. The youth with the backing of the general Kenyan population rejected the finance bill 2024, but the new Cabinet Secretary for Treasury is planning to bring back portions of the bill without public participation. The youth urged the President to fire the cabinet because of arrogance and corruption. Some of them were again reappointed plus he brought in new political characters tinted with corruption. The youth are demanding to have at least 7 cabinet secretaries who are youth. The youth demanded for accountability and good governance but so far no action has been taken on those accused of corruption. The youth called for an end to police brutality that stops them from exercising their rights to peaceful protest. Instead, more than 60 protesters have been killed in the previous protests.
Message to Members of Parliament. MP's and senators were elected by Kenyans to represent them. However, they disrespected the people who voted for them by passing the finance bill 2024 while Kenyans were on the streets demonstrating against it. During the vetting of Cabinet Secretary nominees, the MP's ignored petitions filed by Kenyans against those nominees. We demand that the Government stops the act of passing laws that are against the people of Kenya.
Message to the people of Kenya. Psalm 82:2 is a verse that speaks directly to us as Kenyans. We should take a stand that we will not support the same people who are destroying our nation. All corrupt persons should be removed from leadership positions.
Message to the Church. Church leaders should realize that the youth are not fighting the Church but only demanding for accountability. Opportunities should be created for the youth within Church structures. The youth should be involved in governance and decision making positions. Let us all pursue justice and accountability just as it is expressed in our national anthem.
