Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura Press Briefing on 5th September 2024
Today's briefing come from the background of several reports on abandoned projects which also project a situation of corruption.
The Government is responding by conducting inspections of Development Projects started by the Government. Officials from the Office of the President will conduct all the necessary inspections across all regions. Even remote regions will be included to prove how the Government has achieved a lot unlike the allegations. These inspections will prove that the projects are not ghost projects and that what is on the ground matches what is on paper.
Lawyer-turned activist Morara Kebaso has done documented incomplete or ghost projects and also alleging corruption practices. He has toured various counties to report on stalled projects including those launched during the time Hon William Ruto was Deputy President. He has so far toured 18 counties and he is planning to visit more. He is gaining public support as he carries on with the above touring.
The Government is keen on visible projects and not ghost projects as alleged so far. The Government has a target on the construction of affordable houses. This will address the shortages experienced on both rural and urban housing. More than 60% of Kenya's urban population live in slums without adequate sanitation. The Government is committed to changing this housing crisis into an opportunity. This is by creating jobs in the construction sector. Young people who graduate from TVET's every year across the country will get direct employment through casual jobs such as plumbers, carpenters and masons. Indirect employment will also be created through the production and supply of building materials.
Kenya Urban Support Program in partnership with County Governments is constructing modern markets. This will provide a conducive environment for mama mbogas to carry out their trading activities.
