Calls for urgent re-constitution of IEBC
The following organizations came together to call for the urgent re-constitution of IEBC: Elections Observations Group, Centre for Multi party Democracy, ELGIA and Transparency International among others. The country has been now running for two years without IEBC Commissioners. We urge the recently constituted selection panel to act with transparency. All relevant state agencies including Parliament should hurry up the process within the 90 days deadline. That means by 1st June although they can still make it by early May if they hurry up the process. The media should continuously share updates.
The Judiciary should also contribute to enhancing the process without any unnecessary obstacles. We encourage all Kenyans with integrity and qualified to apply. Many competent people should flood the applications so there is a higher chance of having a pool of competent Commissioners eventually.
The incoming Commissioners will have a lot of work to do. The upcoming by-elections, the boundary review process, voter registration and updating voter register. They will also be involved in enhancing timely election reforms as well as meaningful public participation.
We urge the incoming IEBC to curb the use of funds from illicit sources to fund campaigns, also curb the use of public funds to fund campaigns.
We acknowledge an improvement in the issuance of new ID cards although the replacement of lost ID's is marred with corruption. Those living on border towns are finding it difficult to obtain ID's. We urge that the process is digitized to make it more efficient and to reduce corruption. We are also asking for a reduction on fees on replacement ID's.
Those sworn in include Lindah Gakii and Adams Oloo, nominated by the Parliamentary Service Commission, as well as Evans Misati, Nicodemus Bore, and Koki Muli, representing the Political Parties Liaison Committee. Andrew Kipkoech from ICPAK and Nelson Makanda of the Interreligious Council of Kenya were also sworn in. Two members are yet to be sworn in hopefully by end of today so they can start working effectively.
