Kenya Railways Land Scandal
A major land scandal has erupted as Wiper Party leaders accuse Kenya Railways of illegally grabbing land belonging to retired railway workers. The leaders, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, are demanding the immediate return of land on Valley Road, Nairobi, which was vested in the Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefit Scheme in 2006.
The retirees were originally allocated these properties as part of their pension benefits. However, the land has allegedly fallen into the hands of persons protected by government operatives. According to Wiper leaders, this is not an isolated case, as over other estates, including Ngara, Makongeni, and Lower Hill Road, have been grabbed under questionable circumstances. The Kenya Railways Corporation Act of 2006 explicitly states that retirees should be settled on the land they occupied, yet this legal provision has been ignored.
Kalonzo Musyoka has linked powerful government officials to the scandal, accusing them of organizing a land-grabbing syndicate that exploits the elderly. The senator also named TOTA and an unnamed agent as key players in the fraudulent land transfers.
The Association of Kenya Railways Retirees (AKERARE) has released shocking details of the fraudulent transactions, revealing:
A 2014 sale agreement between the Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme and Mahadi Investment Limited, with a purchase price of Ksh. 400 million.
Ksh. 200 million already paid, yet Kenya Railways refuses to release completion documents, stalling the final transaction.
A sudden police-backed eviction on November 15, 2024, where Kenya Railways officers stormed the property at 4:00 AM, forcefully removing residents and demolishing structures.
An unknown individual has since taken over the land under police protection, raising questions about who truly owns the property and who benefits from the takeover. With armed police officers guarding the contested property, retirees say they have been locked out and have vowed to reclaim their land through mass action if the government fails to intervene.
The Wiper Party leaders have threatened to mobilize mass protests and take legal action against Kenya Railways and any government officials involved in the scandal. As pressure mounts, all eyes are on Kenya Railways Corporation and the Ruto administration to see whether justice will be served—or whether another case of state-backed land grabbing will go unpunished.
