HEVA FUND

HEVA FUND PARTNERS WITH FOUR FINANCIAL SERVICE PROVIDERS AND TWO AGGREGATOR PLATFORMS TO BRIDGE CREATIVE INDUSTRY’S FINANCIAL GAP, BOLSTER SECTOR

HEVA is Africa’s first innovative investments, knowledge solutions, and advisory group dedicated to the creative industries. Since 2013, HEVA has generated insights, rolled out investments, developed business support facilities, and innovated financial models specifically for the growth of the creative industries. HEVA has led creative programs in 14 African countries.

The local creative and cultural industries sector has received a shot in the arm following the official launch of a first of its kind $5million investment by HEVA Fund, to provide tailored financial solutions to creatives. With over 11 years of experience in fueling Africa’s creative industries, HEVA has been a pioneer in developing innovative financial products and initiatives that cater to the unique needs of creative entrepreneurs and businesses. This latest investment builds on HEVA’s legacy of championing sustainable growth, innovation, and financial inclusion for the sector.

Dubbed ‘Ota Kopa & Ota Kopa Plus,’ the new financial products, offered in partnership with four financial service providers (FSPs)Longitude Capital, Tenakata Ltd, Kenya Banker's Sacco, Lipa Later and two aggregator platforms, Wowzi and Shop Zetu aim to finance over 7,000 young women and men in the creative sector. There is also a partnership with Pioneer Insurance. Creatives in these categories include content creators, photographers, filmmakers, musicians, make-up artists, game developers and fashion designer.A total of $5 million (approximately KSh 644 million) will be disbursed to individuals and enterprises in the cultural and creative industries. Having gained insights into their operations, Hevafund will be able to boost their creativity with a sustainable revolving fund. We are stepping into a gap, since, generally, the finance industry is not willing to invest in the above creative industries.

HEVA and its partners have implemented a deliberate and targeted strategy, aiming for 70% of the 7,000 beneficiaries to be young women, 10% to be refugees, and 5% to be people with disabilities. Creatives can apply for any amount up to KSh 999,999 for Ota Kopa and from KSh 1 million up to KSh 4,999,999 for Ota Kopa+.

Despite its huge potential to become a key economic driver, export earner and a massive job creator, the sector has historically faced many challenges chief of which is financing which limits the creatives’ and artists’ ability and capacity to access the tools, new media and technology they require to express themselves.

According to the key note address by Wakiuri Njunguna, Hevafund have already been around for 12 years. Now with the launch of OTA Kopa and OTA Kopa Plus, the organization will be more impactful.

HEVA undertook a rigorous 3-month selection process based on key financial and operational metrics. We selected FSPs and Aggregator Platforms with a shared vision of ethical practices in lending and a willingness to provide affordable loans to creative entrepreneurs and businesses.
